Happy 2011 from the Bondes!

December 31, 2010
Dear Family and Friends,
A life of gratitude is a life of abundance! There is enough joy, love, hope, peace, light, laughter, and music for all!
As I look back on this last day of 2010, a sense of gratitude rises up within me. What a life! Trying to describe this year in just one sentence or a few words is like trying to follow just one piece of thread in a tapestry. It is a complex picture filled with adventure, health struggles, profound accomplishment, new friendships, new commitments, travels, music and Love. Indeed and in truth, there are many things to be thankful for this year. Here is a listing of some of them:
MUSIC THAT MAKES COMMUNITY: In January, I had the privilege of taking a paperless-singing (worship) workshop in San Francisco called “Music that makes Community” and sponsored by All Saints Company. While I was there a visit to St. Gregory’s of Nyssa Episcopal Church gave me whole new insight into inviting and meaningful worship through paperless singing.  Later in January I visited a tiny little spiritual community (St. Lydia’s) in New York City who are taking worship back to the origin of sharing a home-cooked meal while praying for each other, no experience required. Later in August, I enjoyed a reunion with some Umbrian Serenades choir members from last year. Back here in Minneapolis, I was able to sit in on a chanting workshop given by Anna Hernandez. Also here in Minneapolis, I have been active in a hospice/threshold choir. Again paperless and a capella, we sing for people who are struggling with life or in transition to the next life. Did you know that there are now  at least two hospice choirs in Minneapolis plus one in Rochester, one in Winona? Did you know that there are four community choirs in the Twin Cities where you can go with no training, no tryouts, and just sing for the fun of it, for the joy of it? We create harmony together that we simply can’t create on our own. I am so grateful for singing; especially when it is creating harmonious communities!
HABITAT GUATEMALA: In April, Pete and I had the privilege of building homes with other Thrivent volunteers for people in eastern Guatemala. What a joy to meet and work alongside the people whose homes we worked on! They were so loving toward us. The goodbye was tearful. How lucky we are to have enough to share our time with others! And amazing that we were able to climb and see the Pacaya Volcano (near Antigua) just weeks before it erupted! Whoa!
LUKE: He’s six-foot-one now. In January he and his friend, Derek won a trip to New York City to compete in the DemandTec Retail challenge. They didn’t win the national but we had a fun trip with them and the scholarship they won locally helped with college. With a big grin and a whole bunch of equally amazing friends, our youngest walked on stage to receive his high school diploma in June. From there he got a job working as an intern at Piper Jaffrey for the summer and then with nine of his classmates, he began the St. Olaf College experience. Luke (18) loves college, the learning, the people and the music. He’s not studying music at St. Olaf but he is playing as often as he can and enjoys finding others to share it with. In addition to piano, he plays guitar and has recently added harmonica and for Christmas, accordion. Following in his brothers’ footsteps, he’s decided being vegetarian is in line with his goals as well.
KARL & ERICA: We continue to have the pleasure of living with Karl (24). Karl has a heart for the world and the earth in particular. To further express this love of his, Karl has decided to be vegan, to walk more, drive less, and to take as many pictures of this wonderful planet as he can. On July 10th, Karl got Erica to say YES. Ever since, they have been excitedly planning the wedding (June 11, 2011) at a state park in Wisconsin, the honeymoon, and where to live next. Karl continues to nanny, and provide after school programs at a local park. Meanwhile, Erica finished student teaching and graduated from Augsburg College just this December. The job hunt is on.
JACOB & BETH: Jacob’s part-time job at Laura Jeffrey Academy in St. Paul grew into a full-time job teaching English to middle school girls. Like his dad, Jacob(26) is regular bike commuter. Beth is already halfway through law school and working part-time at a law firm. They’ve recently added another kitten to the house. Ryan joins Cali and Ronnie, their dog. It is wonderful to have them living only a few miles away.
HOLDEN  VILLAGE/TRAIN TRIP: In August, Pete, Julie and Luke went on a great adventure along with 26 other people from GA Church. We traveled by train, by bus, and finally by ferry to Holden Village in the mountains of Washington state. For 50 years, Holden has been a wilderness oasis for people who truly want to be away from it all. It is worth the trip and the time; a place where the soul can really rest, where one can see stunning views in every direction.
JULIE’S FAMILY: We loved the train so much on the Holden trip that Pete and I decided to use it again to visit my brother Erik and wife Kathryn in Washburn, ND. The train travels by night between the Twin Cities and Minot where Erik picked us up. We had a fun time catching up and eating at community dinners. We even got to see niece Gracia in her digs down in Bismarck.  And earlier in the year, I planned extra time in my trip to San Francisco to drive up to Grass Valley, CA to see my brother Peter and Emmy. It was an extra bonus to spend some time with Peter’s son Scott and his family. It was a special pleasure to get to spend time with Karissa and finally meet Chelsea who is already quite a young lady at 3 or is it 4?  I am grateful for these reunions. Meantime, each week my sister Vangie and I connect by phone, a habit we have maintained for decades now.  Even as far apart as we are, the distance has not stopped our hearts from being close. For this I can never thank her enough.  I hope to see more of my family in the coming years.
A VEGAN THANKSGIVING: This year, we had one thanksgiving with Pete’s parents and family. I am so lucky, so grateful to be part of the wonderful Bonde family. The next day, we had another, very special, Vegan Thanksgiving at our house with our boys and their girls. The five of them planned, shopped and cooked the entire vegan meal while Pete and I relaxed. Our menu consisted of Harvest Wild Rice, mashed potatoes (no butter), mushroom gravy, cornbread, Brussels Sprouts, Tofurky, Golden Orchard Quinoa, Veggie Stuffing, vegan gravy, Old Fashioned Sweet potatoes and vegan chocolate muffins for dessert. Wow! It was delicious, satisfying and packed with joy and gratitude. We recommend the experience. We are so grateful and proud to have such beautiful, thoughtful, generous and kind children! We can’t wait to see what they cook up next.
GARDENS, GRASSES, TREES: Pete is our gardener with me helping a little on the raspberries. It doesn’t seem like much sometimes but a well kept garden with lovely flowers and grasses to decorate continually reminds us of our intricate relationship with the earth and that abundance is more nature’s way, more God’s way, than scarcity is. Next time you go for a walk, take a camera and photograph the abundance, the beauty growing on your street. Wow!
A NEW CAR? Just before the snow blew this year, Pete and I did a revolutionary thing. We went out and bought our first ever new car. It had only five miles on it when we picked it up. We are very happy with our new blue 2010 Prius. The gas mileage is twice what we used to get and the quiet ride is very comfortable! We can’t help but be grateful that the green  Town & Country and the blue Toyota Corolla have served us so long and we are also glad to be only handling one car now.
HEALTH STRUGGLES: Beginning with kidney stone surgery in March, I have had a year long struggle with nagging health issues. After three sprained ankles, numerous kidney stones, bursitis and a nagging backache, I am finally beginning to understand what I need to do to be healthy. I am now on supplements to correct my Vitamin D deficiency which in turn should curb my hyper-para-thyroid activity which should put the calcium back in my bones and not in my kidneys. The goal is to be able to get back to exercising in 2011. I am also pursuing acupuncture and chiropractic treatments as well as beginning Tai Chi for balance. I am grateful for all that I can do and have done in spite of this.
On another whole level of health struggle, we are in the midst of praying for Pete’s sister Karen, who is battling breast cancer (surgery was in December, chemo starts in January). And we are praying for Earl, Pete’s dad who was diagnosed with amyloidosis late this year. Earl, 85, has been struggling for much of the year with a variety of symptoms; the most irritating one being that he has blackout spells where his blood pressure plummets and his loses consciousness. As I write this, he is back in the hospital once again with a urinary tract infection.
There is nothing like cancer or a blackout spell to put life into perspective. Nothing really matters except love and the people we are privileged to meet and share it with.  During our Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations, Earl has stopped us all twice to just say “You are all the best family ever!” Perhaps we could take Earl’s habit up and stop more often to say what is going well for us.
FRIENDSHIP:  On a fairly warm October weekend, I spent a good chunk of my evening laughing in the dark with one of my dearest friends. We were at a retreat up at the Dwelling in the Woods and got to giggling. We couldn’t stop…for over an hour, we laughed and laughed. I just can’t think of a better way to say how grateful I am for my life than this small snapshot from my year! It doesn’t get much better than laughing oneself to exhaustion with a friend in the dark under a sky filled with trillions of stars in the north woods.  I have often wondered, how did I get so lucky as to have the extravagance of laughter, the pleasure of friendship and the chance to know so many loving and light-filled beings?
YOU:  If you are reading this letter than you must know that you are part of my abundance, part of my joy, my love. I pray, ask, wish that you will find abundance in your life as you walk through the coming year, as you plant your feet in this moment right here. There really is enough love and joy for all of us!
Blessings on you,
Jules along with Pete

Dear loved ones,

I’ve been struggling to find the right words to summarize the year 2009; a year filled with travel, activity, adventure and change for all of us in our family. On a whim I decided to check out one of facebook’s** applications which counts up the top ten words you have used in your status updates. Since I update my status at least ever few days, I thought this would be interesting. Lo and behold, I believe I have a way to simply describe 2009 and what it was all about. So here they are…my top ten in order from top to bottom:

Love life more

New friends singing
Good work
Still (as in be still)
Today

And on this 11th day of Christmas and 4th day of the new decade, 2010, here is my thought and my prayer for you my dear friend—whether I’ve known you for my whole life or we have just met a month ago…

I am so honored to have met you and to share this time in history on this planet with you. I look forward to the times we will be able to reconnect and boost each other’s motivation and energy with love (whether that is by phone, email or in person). I pray that you will be blessed in your life, finding deep joy within, wisdom to know which way to go next, courage to let go when it is time and strength to hang on when you need to. And may you feel the Holy Spirit and those around you wrapping you in a blanket of love and kindness. Amen…may it be so!

Sending my love and light,
Jules

**facebook is an internet social network where friends “talk” to each other and share their thoughts about life in brief. If you are not one of these people…no big deal. I have just found it is a way to close the gap of miles and time and still have connection with people I would or have lost track of by now.

More about PETE & JULIE...if you are interested.

TURNING 50 IN MARCH 2009! --On March 6, Pete & I celebrated big with approximately 50 friends in our church fellowship hall. Thanks to all those who graced us with your presence; especially to those who shared a song, a memory or a poem. (my birthday is March 6th, Pete's is March 29th)

MORE ABOUT PETE
Julie likes to tease Pete that he is the only person she knows who after 28 years still has his first job out of college, lives in his first house and still has his first wife. :) Yes, Pete still works for Thrivent in the IT department.

The Dragonfly Project In addition, Pete continues to be very active volunteering for The Dragonfly Project as both the Quickbooks Manager, computer expert and treasurer on the board. The Dragonfly Project has sent out over 23,000 packets with cards, story & key-chains over the last 7 years. In March 2010 we will celebrate the DP's 8th anniversary. As if the DP is not enough, Pete also offers as much time as he can helping build houses for Habitat for Humanity. Around home, he stays busy advising the boys about cars, bank accounts and helping to keep everything running smoothly and everyone fed.

MORE ABOUT JULIE
I continue to work part-time in the office at Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church and also part-time as an independent Spiritual Director. In addition, I have led a few retreats throughout the years. In between work, volunteering and my other adventures, I try to remember that I am still a wife, mom, a sister and a friend.

Italy--the last 2 weeks of July 2009, I traveled with the Umbrian Serenades tour group in the Umbria region of Italy. Umbrian Serenades is a tour that is a combination of choir singing and traveling through medieval towns in Umbria. Although I didn't feel prepared to try out for the choir, I ended up going along with a friend as a traveling companion. It was fantastic, fun, and inspiring with a spiritual pilgrimage thrown in as the group visited the cathedrals at Spoletto, Orvieto and Assisi. The directors, Paulo, Holly, and Pamela were fantastic as was our amazing tour guide, Daniela.
Singing--I am still keeping busy singing with my hospice choir, Morning Star Singers, Singing in the Light with Barbara McAfee (who is also my voice coach), and with choirs at Nativity Lutheran church with David Livingston. Through singing, I have met so many amazing people in this world. 2009 has added quite a few new friends to my singing circle. I am so grateful.
Sacred Life Gatherings--along with my friend Conie, I jumped into the unkown for a six-month experiment in worship on Tuesday nights at 6:30pm from June through November. With Pastor Dave Person, we created an informal and intimate worship experience that focused on community, prayer and participation rather than liturgy and doctrine. I learned a lot about worship and look forward to my next worship adventure when it comes.
Prayer and Silence--"be still and know"--I can't look back on 2009 without also noting how important silence, stillness and prayer have become for me. Whether in centering prayer led by Sister Joan or in meditation with my small prayer group, whether in a Lutheran church or Italian cathedral, in homes or walking one of the snow or sand labyrinths I have made, I have come to treasure these moments of emptiness and silence...and the whispers of wisdom that I hear there.

JULIE & PETE'S ADVENTURES TOGETHER

Boston, Massachusetts--we made our way to Boston twice last year...happy to spend some time and see Boston with Jacob & Beth in February 09 and delighted to return in June 09 for Jacob's graduation. There is nothing quite like a Harvard graduation ceremony. The June trip involved some driving and some flying in order that Jacob & Beth might be able to move back to Minneapolis using our van.
Austin, Texas--
in March 09, along with Karl & Erica, we made our way down to Austin to see nephew Chad & Julie get married, to reconnect with Julie's siblings Peter & Vangie and also to reconnect with some of the Torvik family, part of the greater Madagascar missionary family.

Ross' Teal Lake Resort, near Hayward, Wisconsin--the week before July 4th, Julie & Pete managed to slip away to the peaceful and pristine waters of Teal Lake while staying with friends at the friendly Ross' Teal Lake Resort where guests are treated like old members of the family. We highly recommend the experience.
Cozumel, Mexico--as part of our ongoing plan to spend more time in warmer climes, we spent a week in Cozumel, just the two of us in October. Vacation has never been more peaceful!

Greetings to each one of you, our wonderful extended family, and our amazing friends,

It's the afternoon of December 27th and I'm still in jammies. We're waking up slow and quiet on this day since we finally had our own family celebration last night. The boys are reading or "chatting" with friends on email or google chat or the new web cams they got. Jacob is here from Boston, Karl is here from St. Olaf, and Luke is here as usual. After thirty years, I'm still sharing a wonderful life with my best friend, Pete. It has been 8 years since Hans died and my 3 suriving boys are thriving, living life with their hearts and heads at attention. And I am blessed with family, friends, employment and ministry.

My theme for the year has been Emmanuel-God with us. God has been constantly reminding me since last spring that God's presence is with me everywhere, all the time, no exceptions. During a recent meditation with one of my prayer groups, I was thinking again about Emmanuel-God with us. Afterwards I wrote in my journal, "The God I believe in is not out there somewhere unreachable. The God I believe in has been trying to tell us for several millennia, "I am with you." I mean, why send a baby? The only reason I can think of is to repeat again, "I am here with you. I want to be with you because I love you." The God I believe in is Emmanuel-God with us just as the baby Jesus and then the adult Jesus was with the people of the Mideast thousands of years ago." I was reminded again of God's presence just a few days ago. Last Friday, a sudden severe pain in my back accompanied by a maniacal itchiness caused me to find a small lump in my breast. This threatened to undo me and my Christmas plans. But some close friends began praying for me right away and took time to be with me as I waited for medical help. And then in meditation God again showed up to say, "I'm here." Good news followed as I discovered on Monday that I have shingles and on Christmas Eve morning that the lump is just a cyst. Thanks be to God!

May each of you know this intimate presence of God within and surrounding you with love, forgiveness, joy and peace. May you find hope in abundance in 2009.

love,

Julie (Jules)

ABOUT PETE
As board member, treasurer and computer geek for The Dragonfly Project, Pete has put in about 400 hours of volunteer time in 2008. He spends many hours entering donations, keeping the books straight and managing the computers for this wonderful nonprofit organization that has now sent out over 21,000 condolence cards and key chains to people all over the USA. Recently he was able to set up a virtual network through the Internet that makes working with others on The Dragonfly Project much easier. And because Pete works at Thrivent, we have been able to get some wonderful support from the employees there for helping with Julie's packet assembly events. Recently, Pete also did a virtual event with employees at Thrivent's Appleton offices. Through teleconference, he was able to give his speech in Minneapolis while employees in Appleton assembled packets for us there. In 2009, Pete is looking to add to his volunteer hours by helping others with their taxes through a nonprofit organization called AccountAbility Minnesota. He continues to commute by bike and play softball in the summer. In the colder months, he takes yoga during lunch hour.

MORE ABOUT JULIE
It took a year but I finally transitioned from full-time stay-at-home mom to a woman with a full-time working attitude. My job at Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church is still just part-time but my life is not. In addition to the 12-16 hours per week that I put in as administrative assistant at GA church, and the many hours I have worked on The Dragonfly Project, I also spend a considerable amount of time singing. At Nativity I sing in both Voices of Women (a 6-member group) and Senior Choir. Then twice a month I spend two hours blending my voice for fun at Singing in the Light, a community song circle that gathers to sing for the fun of it, for the community of it and to raise money for 50 Lanterns. From this larger song circle, a smaller circle formed a year ago to form a hospice choir to sing for people who are at life's threshold. There is nothing quite like walking into someone's life at this holy time and sharing the healing of song. Morning Star Singers meets twice a month for practice as well. I simply can't get enough of singing so in December I started taking voice lessons with Barbara McAfee. I thoroughly enjoy every minute that I am singing. I figure I spend about 20 hours a month at various practices and an additional 10 hours a month actually performing for others. I finished my spiritual direction training at Christos Center for Spiritual Formation in May and have led a few retreats and group studies since. Soon I will be adding individual directees to my practice. And I continue to meet twice a month with my delicious writing group, Cursive Friends. To some, I am over committed; to some I am crazy to have this abundant schedule. For me, I am just grateful for each day, for the energy and health to live each moment of my life, for the friends who surround me with love and for God who is present in all of it.

Family Times in 2008

Unlike 2007 when we didn't travel at all, 2008 gave us several opportunities for travel and various family time experiences.

In February, Pete & Julie spent a week enjoying the sunshine in Cancun, Mexico.

In March, Julie & Pete drove to Sioux Falls, SD to participate on a parent panel for a hospice and end of life workshop at the hospital there.

In June, we pulled a U-haul trailer with our van to help Jacob & Beth move to Boston. Along the way, we were able to visit Julie's high school friends, Tami Ring and Katrina Ulrich.

In July, Pete & Julie flew to Mt. Shasta, CA to spend a week with Julie's sister, Vangie & husband Denis. We enjoyed the adventures of hiking on Mt. Shasta and kayaking in a mountain lake as well as sitting by the creek in Vangie's yard and musing about life.

And in August, we gathered for our 15th annual Bonde Camping trip in Nerstrand Big Woods state park, only a mile from the Bonde homestead farm.

Later, in October, Julie returned to Mt. Shasta for a rare Johnson sibling reunion. A visit from Julie's brother, Michael, who currently lives in Madagascar, was the catalyst for gathering us all for four days at Vangie's house in the shadow of Mt. Shasta. We had a good time and even videotaped the six of us singing the Malagasy national anthem to send to Michael's wife, Saina. No news yet on what her reaction was to our silliness.
